The Tichan Peninsula

Tichan is the name of a peninsula located on the southern end of the continent of Grantia. Tichan was once the home of the Tovanian Empire. Tovan was a small city state that over 1500 years earlier had grown into an empire that controlled the entire peninsula as well as large swaths of the Grantian mainland. At its height the Tovanian Empire was a military, maritime, and commercial power. It held sway for hundreds of years until utterly collapsing under the weight of internal and external pressures nearly 900 years ago. The town of Tovan, consisting of less than 5000 souls, stands on the ruins of the once great capital city.

The rest of the peninsula has also suffered from intense de-population. Population centers, such as they are, hold at most a few thousand citizens, while the majority of settlements are nothing more than villages with fewer than 800 people. The southern end of the peninsula is devoid of civilized habitation and is a land filled with wild beasts and wilder legends.

The people of the peninsula are largely human, who make up 95% of the population, while 4% are Elven. The population of Elves dates from the time the lost Elven city of Elden Green was once part of the Tovanian Empire.  There are few dwarves on Tichan, the result of a policy of restricting Dwarf migration dating for the days of the Empire. Hard feelings on both sides are a lingering sore to this day.

Of special note is the identifiable culture that has developed around the Nor'Shore people, which are the people living along the north coast of the peninsula from Gatwell to locales south and west. Nor'Shore folk are known for being an especially hardy and taciturn bunch, given they bear the brunt of raiding by orc pirates. Evidence of their strength of character can be seen in the recent (i.e. in the last 20 years) founding of the town of Purwell in a part of Tichan that had not seen civilization for hundreds of years.
